Why Buy a Puppy From a Breeder

Once you've decided that you want a sheltie, you're next faced with locating a puppy. Most people will turn to a pet store or the want-ads in the local newspaper. This is definitely NOT a good way to find a sheltie puppy. Most pet stores obtain their puppies from puppy mills and the animals have been raised in horrible conditions. Reputable breeders DO NOT SELL TO PET STORES FOR THIS REASON. Breeding for fun or profit rarely produces the quality, soundness or temperament achieved by reputable and conscientious breeders. Many of these puppies have not been properly bred or socialized and may have health and temperment problems. Buying from a reputable breeder is the best way to obtain a puppy. (Rescue organizations, which are often run and sponsored by breed clubs are another option.) The reasons for this are many. Dedicated and knowledgeable breeders do all in their power to breed according to the AKC Shetland Sheepdog Standard. It is their responsibility to produce sound, healthy animals that have good temperments. A reputable breeder will alway be there to offer support and answer your questions. They stand behind their puppies in case there is a problem. Companion quality animals are sold on spay/neuter agreements at a lower price as they should not be used for breeding. These animal make wonderful and beautiful pets! They may be the wrong size (1/8 of an inch can keep a fine animal out of the show ring), or have a spot of blue in an eye, or some other tiny difference from a show animal.

The breeders listed on this page are people we have personal experience with. They wonderful, honest people who have all been there to help us along the way. You may find other breeders by using an AKC breeder referral contact. The responsible breeder will be screening you, looking for the best home for each puppy. Expect to be interveiwed and asked many questions before they will part with a puppy.
